I’ve been listening to the Glee version of “Teenage Dream” since it came out last week and have been having flashbacks to auditioning for the Dear Abbeys my freshman year at BU.
These are the facts surrounding said audition:
I sang Johnny Mathis’ “Wonderful, Wonderful.”
And I was rejected.
The sheer terror of auditioning scarred me so that the next time I’d audition for anything again would be for an improv troupe at WIT 10 years later. (And still, it took me three years — and seven auditions! — to get into my aspirational troupe, Caveat.)
As an emotional cutter, though, I still think about what life would have been like had I gotten into the Dear Abbeys and had made a name for myself as a member of an all-male acapella troupe in college. Teenage dream, indeed.
